Tour of Regional Queensland

In all the countries we have visited and all the millions of miles we have travelled, this trip to The Cape is a highlight in our adventures. We live in a magnificent country and it takes a trip like this to view it through a lens different to our usual one.

Cape Trip Reflections

The roads were pretty rough … and dusty. Camping spots were pretty basic … and dusty. Showers stank of bore water and had dust embedded in the crevasses. The toilets displayed signs warning people about the frogs and snakes …and the dust stained the porcelain red.The dust, of course, is legendary – with good reason as it is as fine as baby power and infiltrates everything from your sinuses to your socks. But the land was indescribably beautiful – so incredibly rich in colour and texture.

Eric thoroughly enjoyed the driving on iconic roads and tracks as well as visiting places that were the folklore of his schooling years. We loved visiting small isolated towns, roadhouses and cattle stations and admiring the resilience of the people who lived there. I’m not sure I would have the patience needed to wait weeks and weeks for the next road train or ship to deliver basic quilting supplies …

We travelled with a great group of people. I have numerous photos of our ‘mobile men’s shed’ where people gathered to help change a tyre, swear at a leaking fuel pump or dig someone out of the sand. It was funny to hear the conversations and people admiring someone else’s tool or expertise. I’m sure there were several Christmas wish lists generated as a result…..

Nine weeks is a long – make that VERY long – time to be camping in the outback but we would not have missed a single day of it.
