Observation Rally – 8-9 July 2017
The LRC mid-year social event – observation rally and overnight stay at Jugiong, and dinner at The Sir George
Thirty club members braved the elements to participate in the club’s mid-year social event.
Meeting in chilly conditions at the Gundaroo Showground, the group was supplied with loose directions and sharp questions. The group set off at their own pace with the aim of meeting for lunch around 12.30pm in Boorowa.
The first items to be discovered were located in and around Gunning, with some of the clues being a bit cryptic due to the locals not raising the Australian flag (which the participants were trying to locate). A few return passes saw some of the participants noticing that the flag pole was there but was missing the offending object (the flag had been there in Google street view), enabling a few to answer the question.
The hunt for the remaining solutions continued on to Boorowa, through Dalton and Rye Park, with all participants arriving in Boorowa close to the anticipated time.
Lunch in Boorowa was a varied affair, with some bringing their own to eat in the park, others buying something in town and then joining up in the park, and some opting for the warmer option of eating lunch at the hotel.
Although host of the trip, Kaylene had been unable to complete a reconnaissance prior to the event (due to a family illness), so had to rely on her research from Google street view. Paul and Kaylene followed along behind the participants to check the answers to the clues. After consultation with the group, it was agreed that one clue was obsolete as ‘someone’ had stolen the signpost that would have provided the answer.
After lunch, the group began to head off to Jugiong with the Darkes becoming the trip leaders, navigating their way through the back roads with some interesting turns along the way. We were led through some beautiful countryside to our destination. A big thank you to David and Ann for stepping in for the final leg of the trip.
Everyone went in different directions, some to the motel, some to B&Bs, and others to the campground to set up camp. Once everyone had settled in, the usual practice of gathering around a fire for pre-dinner drinks and nibbles was observed. Then it was on to The Sir George for dinner.
The crew at The Sir George looked after us very well, with the owner Kim even randomly writing numbers on the bottom of plates for what would become the lucky draw. The dining room was flat-out but the service was efficient, and many commented on the quality of the food presented.
Then it was award time, with Kevin the winner of the Observation Rally, followed by the lucky draw prizes.
Sunday morning was a slow, cold and damp beginning to what would turn out to be a lovely winter’s day. Once breakfast was complete, people started to pack up and slowly make their own way home.
Kaylene would like to thank everyone for their support and all participants want to thank Kaylene (and Paul) for organising the event.
