Trip Report
Participants gathered at the Tharwa Bridge Recreation Area car park with everyone arriving promptly (except for the trip leaders who were 5 minutes late).
With Tail End Charlie (Matt Bolton) bringing up the rear of the eight vehicle convoy, we left the carpark and headed off along Naas Road through Namadgi National Park. Given the recent weather the road condition weren’t too bad with some rough patches and areas that were quite muddy. While the temperature was around 9 degrees at Tharwa Bridge, it did manage to drop down to 3 degrees at 1250 metres, the highest point of our journey. The convoy managed to avoid the prolific number of kangaroos that were still around and quite close to the road.
It was interesting to come across a red light in the middle of nowhere. However, we stopped and waited our turn before proceeding through the road works which proved to be one of the muddier locations on our route.
We continued on with Naas Road eventually becoming Bobeyan Road, which we followed through the Snowy Mountains Highway where we took a right turn to Adaminaby.
A few of the convoy took advantage of the public facilities near the Big Trout before heading off to breakfast at The Bakehouse.Once again The Bakehouse did a wonderful job of accommodating our group, including providing the same custom menu as arranged by our previous trip lead by Russell.
Due to the conditions of the roads on the first part of the trip, the option of taking the alternative route back to Canberra, on dirt roads, was cancelled. After a great breakfast everyone departed to pursue their own adventures.
A great Sunday drive in the country and if you are looking for a great one day drive then this is good one to put on your list (and maybe even consider putting on as a club trip with plenty of alternative routes back to Canberra and surrounds – happy to help you organise).
