Michalego lunch

The weather was a little undecided, on ‘whether’ it was going to be warm or cold, as the trip participants gathered in the car park at Spotlight Queanbeyan. Although we didn’t know it at the time, Roz, Bob, Fred and Val were the first to arrive, followed by John and Suzanne, with the last place being hotly contested by Ann & David and the trip leaders, Paul and Kaylene (and their granddaughter Kaiyah).

The landscape changes a great deal along the Captain’s Flat Road with the effects of little rain very noticeable and the damage caused by the previous year’s bushfire still apparent, especially the trees that are finding it very difficult, if at all, to grow again due to the lack of water.

We quickly proceeded through Captain’s flat via Miners Road onto Jerangle Road, heading towards Bredbo. The road is gradually being upgraded, with widening and sealing occurring in some places. Unfortunately, this means that other sections of the dirt road are extremely rough but it is still a very scenic drive.

The next landmark was the Fire Station where we took a left turn onto Tinderry Road which, given it is a lesser dirt road, is in pretty good condition (except for a few places). The country in this area was quite green, with a little bit of a water crossing over the Queanbeyan River.

Crossing over the ranges, we were greeted with spectacular views over Michelago and surrounds. We continued on the winding road down into Michelago with the enticing thoughts of what we had pre-ordered for lunch.

We all arrived safely at the Michelago General Store and Café, where we joined Sue and her mother Gwen who had arrived before us. Shortly afterwards, we were joined by John and Ingrid who had taken the opportunity to take their Series vehicle for a run.

Sally and the team at Michelago General Store made the group very welcome and ensured that everyone was fed and watered as quickly as possible. The Store is gradually being refurbished and it’s great to see a local spot well patronised with many coming and going as we were enjoying our lunch. If you get the opportunity, it is well worth a stop.

After lunch, the group headed off to pursue their own activities with the Darkes and the Koppes electing to continue on to the Bredbo Christmas Barn. What an amazing place to visit with wall to wall and ceiling to floor riot of colour. Our granddaughter Kaiyah, who for a two year old was very restrained, was enthralled by the colour, glitter and amazing things on offer. After making their selection, the Darkes headed off, closely followed by an overawed two year old and worn out, but happy grandparents.

Thank you to all for joining us on this adventure and for your kind comments including: Many thanks for arranging the trip. We really enjoyed the drive and the lunch.
